Volunteers staff the information desk at Jamestown between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m, when most of the visitors arrive. Like most volunteers, Ralph Townley greets people, answers questions, and informs them about the programs. "If they have time, I tell them stories about what happened at Jamestown," said Ralph. Ralph has been a volunteer since 1998, and has logged over 2,500 hours of service. In the process, he has augmented his knowledge of early American history.
Bob Lamb, another resident who volunteers at Jamestown Island, is enthusiastic because others care so deeply about the history of this country. "If you stop and think about the visitors who come here," said Bob, "they're the people who want to learn about the beginnings of the United States. You have to say 'God bless them.'"
Patriots Colony volunteers have a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience to share with visitors and staff. "They're knowledgeable, well versed in Williamsburg's attractions, and they keep us on our toes because they want to learn history," commented Diane Stallings. She added that Patriots Colony volunteers are top notch, and require little training.
Nell Bancroft, another Patriots Colony resident who has worked at Jamestown Island for the past year, summed it all up nicely. "I thought it would be interesting to work in a place where it all began. I've been a volunteer most of my life in different contexts. I derive satisfaction in knowing that I contribute in some way."
